Macrotasking and Crowdfarming: A Reflection on An Emerging Type of Crowdsourcing Workforce

Yihong Wang

Crowdsourcing has become an international phenomenon attracting industrial practitioners and researchersacross the globe. However, they generally overlook issues pertaining to an emerging type of crowd workforcethat is distinct from typical solo crowdworkers – crowdfarm – that of organizations taking and undertaking large and complex crowdwork (i.e., macrotasks) as part of their formal businesses.

The lack of understanding about the evolving crowdsourcing workforce and their practices have been identified as an obstacle to the development and application of crowdsourcing as a disruptive value-creation model utilizing the resources of human intelligence.

Based on the four-year consecutive studies in the Chinese crowdsourcing community, I will share findings on observed issues from the following perspectives:

a) what are the differences in work experiences between solo crowdworkers and newly emerged crowdsourcing labor – crowdfarm workers;

b) how crowdfarm engage in different types of macrotasks; and

c) what are the impacts crowdfarms and similar crowdworking organizations could have on the general crowdsourcing context.

We hope this colloquium can motivate others to join in the research and discussion of the evolving crowdsourcing practices and the profound effect on the evolution of the gig economy and the well-being of millions of people now engaged in digital works.

The EUSSET Colloquium is a forum where community members can engage in deep intellectual exchanges.
